Yoga Mats Compared: Thickness, Size, Weight and Material
Thickness decides comfort, material decides grip and weight. The thick foam mats (Gaiam’s 10 mm, Retrospec’s half inch) cushion knees but let you sink in balance poses; studios use 4 to 6 mm. Manduka’s PRO and PROlite are PVC and last longest; natural rubber (JadeYoga, Manduka eKO) grips hardest but contains latex and weighs more; a polyurethane top (Liforme, IUGA) stays grippy when you sweat. Wider mats, 26 inches rather than 24, suit tall or broad-shouldered people.
