How a white elephant swap works
Agree on a price limit first. Everyone brings one wrapped gift at or under it, with no name on the tag, and puts it on the pile. Each player draws a number.
- Player 1 unwraps any gift from the pile and shows it to the room.
- Each player after that, in number order, either unwraps a new gift or steals one that is already open.
- A player who loses a gift to a steal either steals a different open gift or unwraps a new one. No stealing straight back the gift just taken from you.
- A gift is frozen after its third steal: whoever holds it then keeps it. With a big group, freeze it after the second to keep the game moving.
- Once the last gift is unwrapped, player 1, who had no chance to steal, may swap once with anyone holding a gift that isn’t frozen. That ends the game.
The same game goes by Yankee swap in New England and Dirty Santa in the South. If your group plays with dice instead, settle what each number does before the first roll; a common set is 1 or 2 swap with anyone, 3 unwrap yours, 4 pass left, 5 pass right, 6 roll again.
